Preparation
Before insemination it is important that your own doctor tests you for:
HIV-test
Hepatitis B+C
Chlamydia (scrape or urin test) if you are younger than 30 years old
We must have proof that you do not have any of the above diseases before we can agree to perform the insemination.
When you visit your own doctor, it is also a good idea to have:
HOW HEALTHY ARE YOU?
If you have had an infection in the uterus or the fallopian tubes, or if you have had Chlamydia or gonorrhoea, a tissue in the fallopian tubes can be formed, which makes it impossible for both the sperm cells and the egg to pass through.
If that is the case, you should visit your gynaecologist and undergo a test which will show if your fallopian tubes are clear.
If you have endometriosis, it is also a good idea to undergo an examination by your gynaecologist.
GERMAN MEASLES
If you get German measles during the early stages of pregnancy, the baby can be deformed. If you are not sure whether you have had German measles when you were a child, it might be a good idea to let your own doctor do a blood test. That test will show if you have antibodies against German measles. If you have antibodies, you have had German measles. If you do not have antibodies, you can be vaccinated before you are inseminated.
HOW CAN YOU INCREASE YOUR CHANGES OF PREGNANCY?
The Danish Health Department recommends that you take 400 micrograms of folic acid every day in the run-up to getting pregnant.
You are also advised to eat a healthy and varied diet. And that means a lot of fruit and vegetables.
WHAT CAN UPSET THE BALANCE?
• Smoking reduces your chances of pregnancy considerably.
The risk of abortion is also greater if you smoke.
We would advise you to stop smoking before we carry out insemination.
• The Danish Health Department recommends that you do not drink alcohol during pregnancy and when trying to get pregnant.
• There is disagreement about whether coffee and caffeine intake does affect fertility. Several studies point in different directions. To be on the safe side, we advise you not to drink more than five cups of coffee a day.
• Obesity does also affect the fertility. The fatty tissue makes you create too many male sex hormones, which upset your hormones.
Fertility may be affected in a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or more. BMI is calculated as follows: Your weight in kilograms divided by your height measured in meters in the second. For example. weighs 65 kg. and 170 cm. The ratio looks like: 65 / (1.70 x1, 70) = 22.49 BMI.
